EDITORIAL

Dear Readers,

If you have read our recent tweets, Facebook posts, LinkedIn messages, or press releases you have probably already heard that we have just released a completely free PPM product for individual project managers: onepoint PROJECTS Personal Server. The Personal Server comes with the complete base functionality of the Enterprise Server product line, so it goes way beyond what we provided with our open source versions in the past. You can find more information about the Personal Server and how to get the free download in the Solution section below.

When we showed the user interface facelift planned for onepoint PROJECTS 13 at a number of events lately we got tremendously positive feedback – people really loved the subtle changes we did and also the new charts. This led us to the decision that we wanted to avoid you having to wait any longer than necessary to get your hands on the new UI. Which brings us to something you definitely do not know yet: we are splitting release 13 and bringing you the UI facelift plus a few practical new features as onepoint PROJECTS 12.2 already in a few weeks. In fact, we will already demo release 12.2 this week at the pma-focus in Vienna, Austria. Of course, we are in parallel already busily completing the remaining features for release 13.

This brings us to events: we had a booth at the Atlassian Summit for the first time this year. We really liked the event and will most probably be back next year. We could also confirm that the upcoming JIRA Portfolio is really something different than our own two-way JIRA integration – JIRA portfolio is aggregating the agile portfolio, while onepoint PROJECTS acts as a key integration point in standards-based PPM. However, the new JIRA module will provide us with more integration points in the future. This said, don’t forget: pma focus 2014 takes already place this week (October 16) in Vienna. Also PMI’s PM SUMMIT 2014 is already around the corner (mid November in Munich). I hope to see many of you at the one or the other event!

Best Regards,

Gerald Aquila, Founder & CEO

SOLUTION

NEW: onepoint PROJECTS Personal Server – Free Download

onepoint PROJECTS Personal Server is a free, single-user PPM solution that provides all base functionality of the Enterprise Server product line in a plug & play package. This includes advanced project management features such as an interactive work breakdown structure (WBS), visual resource planning, and Earned Value (EV) charts, automatic milestone trend analysis as well as multi-project resource utilization and histogram charts. The Personal Server is also upwards compatible: if you grow out of our entry-level PPM solution you can easily migrate your data into an Enterprise Server installation by simply exporting and importing your data via an XML-backup.

From a technology point of view the Personal Server is packaged into a Jetty container (a very lightweight application server) and uses an embedded Java database (Derby) for storing your project data. This means that you only need to have Java installed on your computer, no need to install a database or an application server. The Personal Server package also contains startup scripts for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X, so you can simply double-click the appropriate script and it will automatically start the Personal Server and your favorite web browser and you are ready to go.

onepoint PROJECTS Personal Server is available as a free download from our website.

onepoint PROJECTS 12.2 – User Interface Facelift

onepoint PROJECTS 12.2 is an intermediary release featuring a user interface facelift and a few already completed features originally planned for release 13. The goal of the UI facelift was to make the onepoint PROJECTS 11/12 user interface even more streamlined, clear, and easier to use.

Besides the general facelift, the new release includes a number of updated icons, improved work breakdown structure and schedule (GANTT) charts, various usability improvements around project and risk planning, a number of additional chart legends, and generally much nicer EV, MTA and histogram charts. We also again put the “Utilization” tool into a separate tab based on end-user feedback (now reachable with less clicks).

In addition, release 12.2 also includes a few practical new features that are mainly centered around standards-based project management:

  • Milestone table. onepoint always had a milestone history table, we now also add a classical milestone table with baseline, most current plan, and actual columns.
  • Risk chart. Many of our users have recently asked for an integrated risk chart based on our portfolio bubble chart, so we have included such a chart based on qualitative impact and probability. Risk bubbles are also colored based on low, medium and high risk values. Let us know if you want different filter settings or prefer other chart axis – feedback is as always welcome.
  • Improved EV, MTA, and histogram charts. Beside just changing the look for our charts we also added a number of new features: all time-based charts now show the orange today marker (new for EV and MTA), the MTA also shows the current trend (beyond the last MTA controlling point), and the resource utilization histogram takes absences (unavailability) into account when calculating the availability line.

onepoint PROJECTS 12.2 is due in a few weeks and will be demoed at pma-focus this week in Vienna.

SPOTLIGHT

Resource Utilization Histogram

The resource utilization histogram is a chart showing the resource utilization over time confined to the pool selected in the resource navigation to the very left of your browser window. By default, utilization values are aggregating on a per-month basis. Since summer you can also switch to a weekly utilization histogram using the “View-Type” dropdown-field. The total resource availability is shown with a blue line starting with onepoint PROJECTS 12.2 (formerly it was black).

In addition, the utilization histogram “stacks” utilization values originating from projects with different probabilities on top of each other. The idea is that you can see the difference between the resource utilization originated from 100% planned projects and those that are currently just project ideas, or depend on whether a certain sales opportunity will be closed or not. This will help you to estimate the resource demand from a worst-case, over a medium-case, to a best-case scenario by comparing the histogram itself to the blue/black total availability line.

Starting with onepoint PROJECTS 12.2 we are also taking periods of unavailability (absences) into account when calculating the total availability line, i.e., if you have absences configured, this will no longer be just a straight line but provide you with an even better approximation of your future resource demand than before – making the resource utilization histogram an even more interesting tool for resource managers.
