Dear Readers,

we had a phenomenal start into the new business year - our first quarter revenues were nearly as good as the Q4 numbers of last year and we currently get more inquiries than ever before. We are also happy that a large part of the new inquiries is driven by products we have either recently introduced (JIRA Connector, integrated agile PM) or that got a major upgrade (Controlling-Cycle, IPMA/PMI project management).

So what is Onepoint up to in 2011? First of all, as some of you already know, we are working on a major new release that will feature a HTML5-based user interface. We are doing this the Onepoint way, i.e., this is an evolutionary project rather than a revolutionary approach. This means that this will be a "normal" major release - everything you have customized by adding custom fields or via configuration changes will work automatically with the new UI. The design of the new UI is also based on an evolutionary approach: we will conserve what works well today and we will only improve on those things you told us that they are not perfect yet. We will provide more details about the new and improved user interface during the next months.

In order that you do not have to wait too long for getting your hands on exciting new features such as, e.g., synchronizing time tracking information from JIRA projects, we have scheduled another minor release that will be out before the summer (Onepoint Project 10.3, June timeframe). And as some of you might have noticed, we have used Release 10.2 Update 1 to add a number of smaller improvements and features such as, e.g., a hierarchical work breakdown structure (read more about this in the Solution section).

Finally, we will be ready to release the new open source version of Onepoint (Onepoint Project 10.2 Community Server) within the next couple of days. Please note that due to technical limitations and stability concerns we will finally drop the MySQL support also for the open source version with this release. Apart from the new printing engine and the report wizard, all other technology improvements have found their way now also into our Community Server version.

Onepoint Project 10.2 Update 1: More than "Just" an Update

Beside the usual bug fixes and performance improvements shipping with updates, Onepoint Project 10.2 Update 1 includes also a number of small, but practical functional improvements:
  • Hierarchical WBS. The new update features a hierarchical work breakdown structure (WBS) chart for the very first time. Like the previous WBS chart, the new WBS chart is fully interactive and completely synchronized with the other project planning views.
  • Improved Trend Bars. When originally basing the new trend bars on Earned Value (EV) in Onepoint 10.2 we did not include actual values for the resource and cost deviation bars. With the new update we are fixing this and we are also improving the performance of multi-project "Status" overviews.
  • Extended IPMA Reports. After recently implementing a number of IPMA-based Onepoint Project installations, we rounded up the update by making small improvements to the IPMA standard reports that are based on direct customer feedback.

IPMA/PMI Standard Reports

Onepoint Project is one of the few execution-oriented project and resource management solutions to include integrated support for document-style IPMA/PMI standard reports. These reports are part of the Controlling Cycle Option (CCO) and can be generated in the form of PDF documents from live project data with the press of a button. Report generation is triggered from the project, activity and controlling-sheet detail dialogs respectively:

  • The Project Order report is used to communicate the project context and baseline plan to the project customer and/or sponsor, as a "contract" between the project manager and the customer and sponsor, as well as for documenting the formal project start.
  • The Work Instruction report is typically used to communicate units of work to contributors or contractors who do not have direct access to the project and resource management system.
  • The Project Progress report summarizes the most important project progress information based on data entered and historized using a controlling sheet including traffic lights and graphical trend-bars based on Earned Value (EV), estimations and actual data.
  • The Project Closure report serves as the formal project closure document. It is intentionally structured very similar to the project order report, but it summarizes mainly actual data. The project closure report can also contain closure comments that can be entered if a project is formally closed by using a special closure controlling sheet.

The major advantages of creating standard reports from live project meta information as well as planning and actual data are that information needs to be only entered once, is safely stored in a central project database and, especially, that the administrative overhead for project report generation is reduced tremendously.

HINT: All project progress information shown in submitted controlling sheets is historized - either directly within the controlling sheet, or via its associated project plan version. Therefore, project progress reports can always easily be re-created from a stored controlling sheet.
