About About onepoint REPORT…

Dear Readers,

The wait is over, onepoint PROJECTS 16 is finally here. Our latest major release is one of the biggest releases ever focusing on three major areas of functionality: strategic management, reporting, and JIRA. All our cloud instances have also already been updated to the new version, so if you are new to onepoint you can already get a free trial based on our latest update to our leading PPM solution.

Another key area we are currently working on is connectivity to SAP. We are just setting up a working group focused on exchanging time tracking information, but more is possible in the future. If you are also interested in integrating your onepoint PROJECTS instance with SAP, let us know – you can find more information about this in the Solution section below.

We are of course also present at various focused events throughout 2017. Upcoming events in Spring include:

  • PM Welt 2017 in Munich/Germany, March 30 (Premium Sponsor)
  • PMXPO on the Web/Internet, April 27
  • Atlassian Summit Europe, Barcelona/Spain, May 2-5
  • Contact us for a 20% discount for onepoint CUSTOMERS!

Last, but not least: as we do not want to have too many optional modules, so-called “options”, we have now integrated skills management into our base product meaning that it is even available in our free Group Server. Check out the “Spotlight” in this issue on how you can take advantage of this new base functionality.

Best Regards,

Gerald Aquila, Founder & CEO

onepoint PROJECTS 16

Our new major release provides improvements in many areas – we will mainly focus here on three major new feature areas and on a few interesting new aspects of our web user experience.

Strategic Management Option

The Strategic Management Option is a new optional module allowing top management to communicate a strategic vision and break it down into several prioritized goals. Users can then plan initiatives to implement these goals and link these initiatives to one or more projects. In the typical onepoint “way” we also provide an integrated controlling component complete with an initiatives pipeline chart and aggregated progress information and status traffic lights.

Compound Reports & Charts

Flexible reporting was a long-term favorite of our end users and we strongly believe that we could extend this to a whole next level by adding the following two new key features:

  • Compound Reports. Compound reports work on collection objects such as project portfolios or resource pools and combine a tabular overview report with individual document-style sub-reports per contained object. A common application of this feature is a portfolio status report that combines a traffic-light based portfolio overview with a project status report per project in a single PDF document.
  • Report Charts. Our report wizard previously only offered basic graphical elements such as traffic lights, or progress bars. But starting with onepoint PROJECTS 16 we added a new report type “Chart” that can initially render various project-based charts such as a work breakdown structure (WBS), schedule/GANTT, milestone trend analysis (MTA), or project pipeline. Chart reports can be used both stand-alone or as part of document and compound reports.

If you are missing a chart report type that you require let us know. We will add additional report charts in upcoming updates and releases – based on your needs and priorities.

JIRA Connector Improvements

For release 16 we have completely rewritten the communication layer of our JIRA integration. Based on multiple years of experience and real-world customer feedback, this new generation of our two-way JIRA synchronization provides many new features, including:

  • Integration of multiple JIRA instances
  • Explicit planning of JIRA issue types
  • Optional inclusion of JIRA subtasks into onepoint project plans
  • Prepared for JIRA Cloud – available later this year

The new communication layer also provides a solid and scalable foundation for additional future improvements that are already on onepoint’s product roadmap such as, e.g., our next generation agile PPM “feature pack” that we are currently working on – stay tuned for more details!

User Interface Enhancements and More...

We also further improved our leading Web user interface by providing even clearer project and status report detail pages, mainly for enhancing on-screen readability. Additionally, all multi-line input fields now feature a new rich text editor allowing you to use basic text formatting (headline styles, bold, italics) and insert bullet and numbered lists, quotations, and links. Naturally, rich text content is of course also rendered as such in reports.

Finally, we have dropped the need of a special “Administrator” user. Instead, you can now have multiple users of a new user level called “System”. Your existing Administrator user has been automatically converted to a System user. Since this is now a “normal” user it also counts against your license – therefore, we have added one free additional user to all existing commercial licenses (purchased prior to release 16).

NEW: Working Group – SAP Connector

We have officially started working on an SAP Connector in the area of time tracking. The current focus is on exchanging work records between onepoint PROJECTS and SAP’s Cross-Application Time Sheet (CATS). One aspect will also be the comparison/reality check with presence/employee time tracking.

This said, we see the area of time tracking as a starting point, a first version. Please contact us if you want to join our working group on the CATS integration, or if you are interested in integrating with other parts of SAP.

Integrated Skills Management

Starting with onepoint PROJECTS 16 skills management is no longer an optional module, but part of the base product. As now everyone can take advantage of this feature (even users of our free Group Server) we thought that this is a good time to tell you more about how skills management works in onepoint.

  1. To take advantage of skills management you first need to set up a skills catalog in your onepoint instance. This is quite easy; every system user can access the “Skills” tool in the system area and create skills – optionally organizing them into skill categories.
  2. Next you use your skills catalog to assign skills to resources and rate them from one to five stars. This can be done by every user who has manager or administrator-level permissions on the resource in question.
  3. Now you can use the “Find” functionality in the RESOURCES overview area to search for available resources based on skills, system-wide resource allocation and unavailability information (absences). You can also directly assign discovered resources with just a press of a button.

As you might have already guessed the most interesting use case of onepoint’s integrated skills management is to quickly look up resources based on skills and availability for staffing new projects. Wherever key resources are scarce this functionality can be very practical.

If you think that skills management could be beneficial for your project organization, simply go ahead and try it out: it is easy to get started and we might also have an interesting concept on our roadmap for solving the problem of keeping your skills ratings up to date – but more about this in a future onepoint REPORT... ;-).
